The recent appointment of the second daughter of Governor Rochas Okorocha who is also the daughter-in-law of Prof. Anthony Anwuka, (Minister of State for Education), Mrs Uju Anwuka, as a governing board member of the Federal College of Education(Tech) Omoku, Rivers state has continued to generate much heat and great concern from different quarters among Imo State citizens. Many Imolites have continued to describe it as the height of nepotism on the side of Gov. Okorocha who they said has converted the administration of the state into (‘familitocracy’) his family enterprise.
Addressing newsmen recently in Owerri, a prominent social critic and renowned public affairs commentator Sir Bob Njemanze, described the appointment and the recent reaction from the chief press secretary to the governor, Sam Onwuemeodo as disgraceful and embarrassing. He stated that, ‘the reaction from government house in relation to the appointment of Okorocha’s daughter to the board of federal college of education River state is very unfortunate, embarrassing and has shown how much the people of Imo state have been taken for granted. We don’t need to go far to know who and how the appointment was made. I have always cautioned that the work of chief press secretary is a very difficult one and is not meant for incompetent people.’ Sir Njemanze described as unfortunate the hasty manner in which government reacted to the development. ‘There should be no hurry in refuting statements in an effort to be seen to be defending the administration. It’s embarrassing that any one would want to give the impression that the governor, his wife and the daughter were unaware of the appointment..The governor’s daughter is the daughter-in-law to Prof. Anwuka whose name was published for the appointment, so why should the government direct the press secretary to tell Imo people that they are unaware of the appointment. So, the simple thing is for Rochas to apologise for over-bearing himself, it’s very embarrassing and disgraceful.’ He went further to say that certain denials are uncalled for.
